Science
The Science program offers academic and applied courses for Grades 9 and 10. Each course gives the student an overview of the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Sciences.
In Grades 11 and 12 the student can specialize by choosing specific courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the University and College Preparation levels.
The Science program is designed to present scientific activities as an important part of the Christian’s task to explore and understand creation. By studying creation, the student will learn more about the characteristics of God, the Creator.
The student will grow in awareness of our responsibility as stewards of God’s world and the complex relationships within this world. The knowledge of scientific principles necessary to understand and respond to issues affecting the student in the future will be gained. The skills, strategies and thought processes required for problem solving and scientific inquiry will be developed through theoretical work and hands-on activities in our new laboratory facility.
Students will be given opportunities to experience science and its applications outside the classroom in a variety of ways as they advance through the program. These opportunities may include an outdoor education camping trip, trips to the Ontario Science Centre, the Museum of Science and Technology, the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Metro Zoo, local chemical companies, and Physics Day at Paramount Canada’s Wonderland.
The student will come to understand the nature, characteristics, and limitations of science and the fact that science is only one way of knowing about the world. The student will also be challenged to consider the ethical issues involved in the development of science and related technologies from a biblical perspective. Key issues include cloning, genetically modified foods, views of the origins of the universe and man/woman, fetal tissue therapy, and uses of nuclear reactions. The student who pursues a science-related field as a career will be encouraged to discern and defend truth concerning these issues.
