French

Language is one of the Lord's many beautiful gifts to the world, for only through language can we communicate with those around us. We value language as an integral part of God's creation, and we encourage second language learning. The study of French is designed to give students familiarity with a foreign language while raising their awareness of another culture. Students will be encouraged to see the importance of being able to communicate with others in order to share the love of Christ and His message of salvation.

French core courses are offered for Grades 9 through 12, with courses at all levels placing an emphasis on communication through speaking, listening, reading, comprehension, and writing skills.

Students will encounter authentic cultural materials, from television commercials to poetry and music, which will enrich their understanding of both language and culture. Students are encouraged to continue taking French beyond the required Grade 9 course. Not only is a basic knowledge of French an example of responsible citizenship in a bilingual country, a whole new world of opportunities is open to the bilingual individual. These include opportunities in business, government, the service industry, and missionary work, to mention a few.

In keeping with the program's desire to create an authentic French learning environment, the Grade 11 and 12 French classes travel to Quebec City for a 4 day immersion experience. Exploring, dining, and sightseeing in the old city are all a part of this exciting adventure!

As well, students who have completed Grade 11 are presented with the opportunity to participate in the Explore Program. This government funded bursary program allows students an affordable immersion experience in the province of Quebec. Students will learn French while living amongst French speaking Canadians and becoming familiar with different aspects of their culture.
