English
English courses at Quinte Christian High School provide solid training in the necessary skills related to language, communication, literature, and media. Students study a wide range of literature, receiving a foundation in the classics (such as Greek and Roman mythology and Shakespearean tragedy) as well as an appreciation of a full range of contemporary works.
Each course is united by an overall theme which challenges the student to explore a key idea broadly and deeply. This, along with the careful selection of challenging literary texts, is one way in which we work to develop a rich literacy. Because the study of literature includes the study of ideas, a Christian perspective is an integral part of each course. While discernment is a natural component of class discussions, students also develop it through specific worldview analysis tools taught in class. The goal is both openness and wisdom. A Christian approach is evident in many other ways in this department: in our approach to and understanding of creativity and the imagination, in the ethical aspects of argumentation, and in our appreciation of the structure and beauty of language, to name a few.
Emphasis is also placed on high level analytic and critical thinking skills, on logic, and on effective public speaking and debating. Self-assessment via videotape viewing of individual performances assists the students in refining their skills.
At Quinte Christian High School we strive to develop English courses that are challenging, stimulating, engaging. Students participate in book club novel units, in high calibre media projects, and our annual trip to the Stratford Festival. They have the option of participating in the local public speaking contest and in a variety of creative writing competitions. Our English courses equip all students to effectively pursue their post-secondary goals with competence, confidence, and wisdom.
